porpoise etymology

I wonder if there is any connection (even just in Kubrick or others doing wordplay, NOT necessarily -- or at all -- because of an etymological connection, which I doubt) . But if the porpoise is a pig, the word "mereswyn" does remind me an awful lot of the word "Martian" which of course is about Mars, not the sea. But still . . . worth a query or two. -zas 7 entries found Related entries & more  Advertisement Related entries & more  Related entries & more  Related entries & more  Relate...

Book

Book see Flower see Pig That the word ‘‘book’’ occurs over a hundred times in the Old Testament is not surprising given the importance of sacred books to the Hebrews. Books were far less important to the Greeks, who tended to rely more on oral tradition; for all the care given to editing him even ‘‘Homer’’ was never a holy text. Various particular books are named in the Old Testament, some of them otherwise unknown to us, but when the Lord tells Joshua that ‘‘This book of the law shall not...

Golden pig

Waiting for the golden pig by Eric Ormsby On the Christmas season in the Czech capital. In the week before Christmas, carp farmers from Southern Bohemia begin setting up their tables in the center of Prague, and as Christmas Eve approaches the sounds of their mallets and cleavers echo through the ancient stony squares. The carp, who have spent the past year lolling on murky pond-bottoms, have been subjected since September to infusions of fresh water to remove their muddy flavor, and now the...

tuning hammer - Marcellus

Near Matches Ignore ExactFull Text Everything2tuning hammer(thing)by ApoxyButt Thu Jun 20 2002 at 16:31:17A tuning hammer is the tool used to change the tension on the strings of a piano. It's called a hammer mainly because of its shape. It's a metal rod with a handle. The head of the rod is bent 90 degrees and has a socket wrench-style end. You can get one for around $30 at any good piano dealer. An important note: vice grips or pliers are not a good substitute for tuning hammers. You'l...
