Rift Valley

Rift Valley SimpCSourceURL: https://refind.com/links/141565788?via=refind RefindWe are restless even in death. Entombed in stone, our most distant ancestors still travel along Earth’s subterranean passageways. One of them, a man in his 20s, began his journey around 230,000 years ago after collapsing into marshland on the lush edge of a river delta feeding a vast lake in East Africa’s Rift Valley. He became the earth in which he lay as nutrients leached from his body and his bone minerali...

The tale of the domesticated horse

They say dogs are man’s best friend, but horses could also claim that title. Horses gave us a way to transport people and goods — literal horsepower. They changed warfare: drawing chariots, carrying the cavalry. They’ve inspired artists from Stone Age cave painters to the makers of "My Little Pony." Their role in industry may have waned in favor of machines, but they still maintain a place in sport, in leisure and in our collective hearts. Horses have been intertwined with human culture...

Mirror-less camera (thing) See all of Mirror-less camera, no other writeups in this node. There are lots of different types of camera out there, from pinholes that you can make yourself using a cardboard box, to large format cameras that use one sheet of film per exposure, via instamatics and 35mm single lens reflex (SLR) cameras. Recently, however, there has been a trend towards 'mirror-less cameras'. They are commonly seen as a bridge between compact cameras and SLRs, but there's a b...

Philosopher AINew topicWhat is the message of Thus Spake Zarathustra?➹ Share ⟳ Try againZarathustra criticizes the herd mentality of those who think in terms of ordinary logic. That is, he attacks their mechanistic view of ultimate reality and how they attempt to understand it. porpoise etymology

I wonder if there is any connection (even just in Kubrick or others doing wordplay, NOT necessarily -- or at all -- because of an etymological connection, which I doubt) . But if the porpoise is a pig, the word "mereswyn" does remind me an awful lot of the word "Martian" which of course is about Mars, not the sea. But still . . . worth a query or two. -zas 7 entries found Related entries & more  Advertisement Related entries & more  Related entries & more  Related entries & more  Relate...

Cat

From Le Internette somweherez: -- Cat Cats, like dogs, are for the most part domesticated and found wherever humans are. There is a wild tabby-like cat in Scotland, but otherwise, the only other feral cats are mostly those that have reverted from domestication. Anyone who has spent any time around cats knows that they can be very solitary animals. The evoke the spirit of independence, cleverness, and of course, curiosity. Cats have been both feared and loved throughout history by many di...

Robert Graves’s White Goddess: A Historical Grammar of Poetic Myth, published a year earlier, was a mythographic account of the ways in which paganism underlies Christian belief. It posited the existence of a moo...
