Valkyrie

A Valkyrie is a figure in Norse mythology depicted as a warrior woman on horseback, a wolf or boar, and armed with a spear, who decides the fate of warriors in battle and carries the dead to Odin’s Valhalla. Valkyrie means "chooser of the slain", and those chosen will fight beside Odin at Ragnarök. Valhalla is Odin’s Hall of Heroes where the spirits of fallen warriors battle each other all day, return to life and health at evening, and spend the night drinking. It was one of f...

(review) by Glowing Fish Mon May 31 2021 at 20:31:26 "Coyote Moon" is a 2003 novel by John A Miller. It falls roughly in the category of literary fiction, with some possible science-fiction elements. It is unclear in this book whether these elements are "real", or whether the book is engaging in some "magical realism". I found this book in a Little Free L...

A Short Analysis of Lewis Carroll’s ‘How Doth the Little Crocodile’

‘How Doth the Little Crocodile’ is a poem by Lewis Carroll, one of the two acknowledged masters of Victorian nonsense verse (along with Edward Lear). Although the poem is among his most popular, after ‘Jabberwocky’, ‘The Walrus and the Carpenter’, and The Hunting of the Snark, its curious origins are less well-known. Before we offer a few words of analysis about the poem, it might be worth recapping the words to ‘How Doth the Little Crocodile’, a poem of two stanzas. How Doth the ...

Creep

It’s an autumnal December, one month into the hibernation of lesser horseshoe bats. They would breathe just once an hour, but for the balmy air troubling their sleep. Their eyelids quiver. Ears twitch for the pacifying fizz and pat of first snow; failing that, for the thawing stalactite drip of the new season, begun already? Perhaps the cold has been and gone. Perhaps they missed it, having tucked themselves too far inside the cave’s oblivion.Fiadh had stared out the conference window at the ...

porpoise etymology

I wonder if there is any connection (even just in Kubrick or others doing wordplay, NOT necessarily -- or at all -- because of an etymological connection, which I doubt) . But if the porpoise is a pig, the word "mereswyn" does remind me an awful lot of the word "Martian" which of course is about Mars, not the sea. But still . . . worth a query or two. -zas 7 entries found Related entries & more  Advertisement Related entries & more  Related entries & more  Related entries & more  Relate...

Deadly Barks: Acousmaticity and Post-Animality in Lucrecia Martel's La ciénaga Abstract Acousmatic sound is often defined as a sound whose source is unseen, that is, in terms of a separation between the senses of hearing and seeing. Discussions about the acousmatic have generally focused on the ontological relation between the sonic effect and the visually unavailable source that produces it. Bird as bard

Could birds in English literature be a reference to poets and playwrights? More ancient languages would suggest a different but not opposite meaning. Birds are often symbolic of the female psyche, and the virtual function of females in the storyworld as potential powerful diplomats. Birds can carry and deliver informed messages (sometimes literally on paper) without causing a direct threat. (Hitchcock's The Birds being one exception) or angelic spy -- a neither necessarily friendly nor nece...
