The movie version of the opening:

I still remember that opening line in the script from when I first read it back in the early 90s: Flames in the night sky. First image. Sentence fragment. A visual reference to heat and passion, right from the very beginning of the screenplay. Atmosphere. Tone. Visual. Five simple words, but it says so much.
