In short, Eis...

Ben Affleck calls himself an ‘ageing alcoholic screenwriter’ in actor roundtable

Ben Affleck has opened up about his struggles with alcoholism in an actor roundtable. Affleck has won rave reviews for his performance in the film, in which he stars as Jack Cunningham, a former high school basketball superstar who is stuck in a meaningless job and struggling with alcoholism – an illness that ruined the character’s marriage. "I’m a recovering alcoholic and I played an alcoholic in the movie," Affleck said, adding that while alcoholism...

Watch a supercut of typewriters being used on screen.

Need a break from writing? Or some cinematic inspiration to begin writing? Or, just really like typewriters? Then perhaps I can interest you in two minutes, four seconds of typewriters on screen, set to Leroy Anderson’s irrepressibly jaunty "The Typewriter." The supercut, courtesy of Ariel Avissar, features shots from Zodiac, Stranger Than Fiction, Citizen Kane, and (of course) The Shining, among others. May the labor of fictional characters guide your artistic endeavors! Or your dumb t...

Verbing Weirds Language

The title for this post comes from one of the great works of art of the twentieth century. I mean, of course, Bill Waterson’s Calvin and Hobbes. "I take nouns and adjectives", Calvin says to Hobbes, "and use them as verbs. Remember when ‘access’ was a thing? Now it’s something you do. It got verbed." I know just what he means. But as a student of the English language, I have to disagree. Calvin’s complaint is not new. Nero Wolfe, the detective in the mystery novels written by Rex Stout, wa...

“Girl Twenty, define a horse.”

In my last post ("Verbish Nouns and Nounish Verbs") I began to talk about what a noun is and what a verb is, and I started with a couple of definitions: a verb is "a word expressing an action or a state of being", while nouns are "used to name persons, places, things, animals, qualities, or actions". A little thought, however, showed that these definitions are less than satisfactory. One problem is that they overlap, since both verbs and nouns express or name actions. Another problem is that ...

Aaron Sorkin Explains Why Most Of His Films Take Place Indoors: “I Need Four Walls Very Badly”

When you think of some of the most iconic moments in an Aaron Sorkin-written film or TV show, they all likely take place indoors. Whether it’s a boardroom in "Social Network" or a courtroom in films such as "The Trial of the Chicago 7" or even "A Few Good Men," many of the most memorable lines of dialogue from Sorkin’s past take place in the confines of four walls and a roof. And according to the writer-director, that’s not by accident. Speaking as part of this year’s THR Writer Roundta...

Posted by Bruce McClure and Deborah Byrd in Human World | January 8, 2021 Astronomers and astrologers may agree that the Age of Aquarius starts when the vernal equinox point moves out of constellation Pisces and into Aquarius. Features Bone Of Contention? Six Letters That Could Rewrite Slavic History February 20, 2021 08:53 GMT By Coilin O'Connor Like many important discoveries, it happened by accident. So she decided to show it to her collea...
